What I did not hear...

This is a message I wrote a while back to a relative who was feeling weary and sad about his/her high school grades. I wish someone had told me this 14 years ago. But there is a very good chance I may have not listened to it. Nevertheless, it is important to say it. Because it is the truth.

GRADES DO NOT DEFINE YOUR PATH completely. There are a thousand different ways to get to where you want to..

Following is the text:

Hi X!

How are you doing? It’s that time of the life where every conversation is about marks and grades and colleges and life decisions. Congratulations on finishing schooling, it’s a very big deal and you have done it well 🥳 doing good or doing bad is a very relative feeling. No one can tell if a 80% score is bad or good. It depends on whom you ask. When I got my 12th grade results, I was on the floor and under the bed crying my eyes out. I felt like a failure. Now after 12 years I wanted to share with you some thoughts I wish I had known earlier. The biggest truth is that grades don’t make ALL of the difference. It does give you access to some places but with time I understood that you can get access to these places in more than one way. So grades are not the deciding factor. If you want to go abroad for higher studies, if you want to get the perfect job- none of these depend on grades. It depends on how you work through college. Students who do projects and internships with companies during college have a higher chance than someone who just scored 90%. Right now in life I meet people of my age who back then scored marks much lower than mine but they are doing such great things and are in positions higher than I can imagine. The important thing is they found what they love doing. So what you feel now- sad or disappointed is actually a positive feeling because it means you care. And caring about one’s own performance leads to better outcomes in the future. Be excited about going to college, and computer science is a vast and competitive field. Try to find out what you love in it and pursue it with your fullest efforts. You will see that after a few years, no one, including you, will remember what a 12th grade score means because the only thing it means is that you finished schooling and that, you definitely did 💪🏾🤩
